1: CHARLES MACLEOD Family Butchers, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. 01851 702445 www.charlesmacleod.co.uk
This is the place that makes the famed Stornoway black pudding that appears on Michelin-starred restaurant menus across Europe. Known locally as Charley Barley's, it's huge inside with plenty of high-quality, fresh local meat for sale. As well as their ubiquitous black pudding, or marag dubh, to use the Gaelic, they also do a white and a fruit pudding, and the friendly staff will make recommendations based on exactly what you're after. For those who can't make the trek, they also sell online.

THE SCOTSMAN RECOMMENDS will appear in the paper as an eight-page supplement every Wednesday from 18 April. Readers will be encouraged to respond to initial suggestions by Scotsman writers - to agree, to disagree or to suggest something else entirely. The best (printable) responses will appear.

We want to open up a debate about what is great about Scotland - whether it is a tiny little specialist shop that is like nowhere else or a secluded beach beyond compare.

Let us know what you think, or email us at readersrecommend@scotsman.com to tell us something you feel passionate about. Then look out for your ideas in the paper from 18 April onwards.
